Figures like Blackbeard and Anne Bonny became infamous not just for their actions, but for the larger-than-life personas they embodied. Over time, these real stories blurred with fiction, giving rise to the iconic image we recognise today — the fierce, wind-swept pirate standing against the storm, equal parts danger and allure.
